Chapter Fifteen

“Gia, will you relax?”

Andrew could see the tension in her shoulders as she unpacked Bella’s things in the smaller of the spare rooms. She’d refused to take both rooms for her and Bella, opting instead to keep the baby close to her. He didn’t push. He knew the past few days had been a shock, and over the next two weeks, he hoped they’d adjust and find some balance. He was bound and determined that they would figure out some sort of arrangement that would be in Bella’s best interest and simultaneously make them both happy.

Her gaze shot nervously toward the open doorway. “Are you sure your parents are really okay with this?”

“As soon as I told my mom you agreed to stay for a few weeks, she rushed out to go shopping. She’s at the store now, picking up who knows what for her first granddaughter. I’m sure she’s trying to make up for lost time so, yeah, it’s safe to say she’s excited.”

“What about your dad, though? And your sister’s room is just down the hall. I don’t want Bella to wake either of them.”

He rolled his eyes. “If that happens, we’ll move you into Grant’s old room in the bunkhouse. Right now his stepson, James, is the only one using it, when he has sleepovers with us guys.”

“I can’t stay in the bunkhouse.”

“Trust me when I promise you that you wouldn’t want to.” He reached for the tiny clothing she was folding and refolding as she stood in front of the empty dresser drawers. He eyed the shirt and felt his gut twist as he realized he’d be trying to figure out how to dress Bella in this soon. He’d be the one staying up nights with her, feeding and changing her, holding her when she cried.

And unless he could convince Gia to stay, he’d be doing it alone.

As much as he wanted to, Andrew knew there were flaws in the idea. Gia had walked away from him once already, thanks to her sister’s machinations. But there was more hurt between them now, especially if Bella really was his daughter. It all kept coming back to this one simple fact—both of their futures were dependent on whether Bella was his. If she was, he didn’t think Gia would ever forgive him. If she wasn’t, he might be able to salvage what they’d once had, but he would lose the one thing that connected them now.
